Mumbai [India], October 6: Vijay Sethupathi’s Tamil action comedy-drama Baththa has shown a strong upward trend at the box office during its opening weekend. After a modest start on Day 1, the film continued to improve its collections and crossed the ₹10 crore mark in India net after four days.
On its fourth day, which fell on Sunday, Baththa collected an estimated ₹3.10 crore net in India. The film recorded its highest single-day collection so far, taking its four-day India net total to approximately ₹10.05 crore. Its India gross collection stood at around ₹11.68 crore during the same period.
The film opened with around ₹1.50 crore net on October 1. Its collections improved considerably on the following days, with Day 2 bringing in approximately ₹2.70 crore and Day 3 recording around ₹2.75 crore. The Sunday jump to ₹3.10 crore gave the film a clear upward trajectory through its first weekend.
Baththa Day-Wise Box Office Collection
Day 1: ₹1.50 crore
Day 2: ₹2.70 crore
Day 3: ₹2.75 crore
Day 4: ₹3.10 crore
Total: ₹10.05 crore net
The fourth-day performance also came with an overall occupancy of around 48% across tracked Tamil 2D shows. The film was screened across approximately 1,290 shows on Sunday, with evening and night shows recording stronger occupancy than the morning shows.
Directed by Balaji Tharaneetharan, Baththa is set in 1986 Madras and centres on a feared local gangster played by Vijay Sethupathi. The story takes an unexpected turn when an eight-year-old boy accidentally locks the gangster inside a school restroom, leading to an unusual relationship between the two characters.
The film also stars Lijomol Jose, Ajay Ghosh and Arjun Chidambaram in important roles. Vijay Sethupathi and Balaji Tharaneetharan have previously worked together on films including Naduvula Konjam Pakkatha Kaanom and Seethakaathi.
What stands out about Baththa is its steady improvement rather than a front-loaded opening. The film’s collections increased on each of its first four days, with Sunday becoming its strongest day so far. The positive response from audiences appears to have helped the film gain momentum during the holiday weekend.
The film was also part of a three-way Tamil release clash during the Gandhi Jayanti weekend. Despite its relatively smaller opening, Baththa finished its first four days with a stronger cumulative collection than the other competing releases mentioned in the trade reports.
The next major test for Baththa will be its weekday performance. After crossing ₹10 crore in India net, the film will need to maintain reasonable occupancy during the week to build a stronger first-week total.
With ₹10.05 crore net in India after four days, Vijay Sethupathi’s Baththa has made a noticeable recovery from its opening-day numbers and enters its first weekday run with positive momentum.
