Nashville: Country music icon Dolly Parton, whose career spanned music, films, television, business and philanthropy, has died at the age of 80 after a brief battle with cancer.
Her publicist, Marcel Pariseau, confirmed that Parton died at the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center in Nashville while surrounded by loved ones.
A Career That Defined Country Music
Dolly Parton rose from humble beginnings in Tennessee to become one of the most recognisable and influential figures in global entertainment. She wrote hundreds of songs during her career, including timeless classics such as “Jolene,” “Coat of Many Colors” and “I Will Always Love You.”
Her music generated more than 100 million worldwide sales and over one billion online streams, according to the report.
From ‘Jolene’ to ‘I Will Always Love You’
Parton achieved her breakthrough with “Jolene” in 1973, a song that went on to become one of the most recognisable country tracks of all time.
She followed it with “I Will Always Love You,” originally written as a farewell connected to her professional partnership with Porter Wagoner. The song later achieved even greater global success when Whitney Houston recorded her version for The Bodyguard.
Her other major hits included “9 to 5,” “Here You Come Again” and “Islands in the Stream,” the latter recorded with Kenny Rogers.
More Than a Music Star
Beyond her music career, Dolly Parton became a successful actor, author, entrepreneur and philanthropist. She starred in films including 9 to 5, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas and Steel Magnolias, while also making appearances on television projects over the years.
She also created the Imagination Library, an education initiative that provides free books to children, inspired in part by her father’s struggles with literacy.
Parton was also the driving force behind Dollywood, the popular theme park in Tennessee that became a major attraction and an important part of her business legacy.
